Lot Essay

Hoop-backed chairs appear in a number of Spencer's compositions, although the present drawing seems most closely linked with the oil painting, The Last Supper, (Private Collection), 1922, (Bell 95). As a compositional device, these highly recognizable chairs are also seen in Washing Peter's Feet, (City Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle; Bell 94) painted the same year and in 'March' and 'April' of Chatto & Windus Almanack which was first published in 1926.
