Lot Essay

Cows at Cookham, (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), 1936, (Bell 201) shows a herd of cattle grazing on the causeway over Cookham Moor with Hilda, Shirin and Unity playing in the foreground. Spencer later dismissed the painting as 'trivial'. (Tate 733.3.1).
