Lot Essay

The seated Moses figure in this position was employed by Spencer in The Resurrection, Cookham, (Tate Gallery, London), 1924-26, (Bell 116). The finished painting includes many references to family and local friends. 'Hilda painting in Bosnia' was not carried out as a painting, however, Turkish Gravestones, Sarajevo, (Private Collection), 1922, (Bell 83) was completed: both Spencer and Richard Carline painted this subject with easels side by side.
