Lot Essay

The present drawing is a study for the children in the upper right-hand area of Christ in Cookham, (Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney), 1952, (Bell 378). The children are oblivious to Christ and his disciples, sitting as they are like a manager and a football team, only a few yards away from them. Professor Keith Bell indicates that although this painting was begun in 1951, it was probably based on an earlier study carried out in the 1930s (see K. Bell, op. cit., p.496). See also lot 254 for another hopscotch study.
