Lot Essay

In a letter to Edward Beddington-Behrens, dated 27 March 1952, Spencer wrote '... Christ preaching as he did from a boat in a lake ... has somehow become linked up with Cookham Regatta: still a thing of the early nineteen hundreds. I have done heaps of large red chalk drawings all about this one notion.

In the olden days, and in the evening just after sunset, the river craft boats, punts and canoes, etc. drifted downstream from the race-course reach, under Cookham Bridge ... In this open space of the river, the punts etc. used to hang about round the old horse ferry, which was moored alongside the "Ferry" hotel lawn. From this wide shallow horse ferry used to be given "Grand Evening Concerts". Colonel Ricardo had famous people from London and my elder brothers played Handel & everybody in the boats & on the land listened. It isn't such a far cry between people listening to Handel and people listening to Christ preaching'. (see F. MacCarthy, op. cit., cat.60).
