Lot Essay

Although the finished oil painting Swan Upping at Cookham, (Tate Gallery, London), 1915-19, (Bell 27) has a different overall composition, many of the compositional ideas are found in the present work, on paper. A part hand print is visible in the lower central area of the sheet, from before the brown wash had dried.
