Lot Essay

Whilst Spencer was at the Slade school of Art, his teacher, Professor Tonks suggested that he should broaden his horizons and visit Somerset, however, the experiment did not work well and Spencer soon returned to Cookham. The artist's brother-in-law, Richard Carline suggested on the verso side of this drawing that the prospect of the present work may be the Blackdown Hills, Somerset.
