Lot Essay

The 'Big Resurrection' referred to by Spencer is The Resurrection, Cookham, (Tate Gallery, London), 1924-26, (Bell 116) in which Henry Slesser was one of the figures in the foreground on the right side of the painting. Henry Slesser was friend and neighbour of Spencer's. He lived at Bourne End and commissioned some of Spencer's early paintings. See catalogue note to lot 36.
