Lot Essay

Spencer painted a small oil on paper, 10 x 14 in. (24.5 x 35.5 cm.) called Hilda studying a model for Burghclere (Private Collection), circa 1930, (Bell 133). Keith Bell explains that 'while he was working on the Burghclere murals, Spencer planned a series of pictures commemorating his patrons Mr and Mrs Behrend. They were to hang in a 'narthex' (never built) at the entrance to the building. [Here] Hilda poses in front of a model of the murals. (see K. Bell, op. cit., p.424).
