Lot Essay
The oil painting, The Resurrection: The Hill of Zion, (Preston, Harris Art Gallery), 1946, (Bell 358e) was intended by Spencer to hang above the larger painting, The Resurrection, Port Glasgow, (Tate Gallery, London), 1947-50 (Bell 358i) and below the smaller oil, Angels of the Apocalypse, (Private Collection), 1949, (Bell 358h); however, the problems of sales and sheer size made this impossible. (See K. Bell. op. cit., p.492).
