Lot Essay

The present work is a study for By the River, (University College, London), 1935, (Bell 170) set in Bellrope Meadow with Cookham beyond. Although not conclusively proven, it would seem likely that in the foreground of the painting, Spencer and Hilda (?) recline comfortably with Shirin and Unity. Hilda passes the artist a letter while he clutches a bunch of wild flowers, perhaps destined for a flower painting. (See K. Bell, op. cit., p.436).
