Lot Essay

Maze first met Winston Churchill in 1915 in the trenches of the First World War while attached to the British Fifth Army H.Q. They remained close friends and Churchill wrote the preface to Maze's biography A Frenchman in Khaki in 1934, as well as ensuring his rescue from Normandy in 1940. Maze was a frequent visitor to Chartwell in Churchill's later years.
