Munnings exhibited his first pictures at the Royal Academy in 1899. 'Stranded' (no.817) depicted two young children struggling against the rushes in a rowing boat on the Waveney river at Mendham. The success of this work and 'Pike Fishing in January', exhibited in the same year (no.460), led to a series of river landscapes which he painted on Saturday afternoons with an easel set up by the bank.
