Lot Essay
'The present work shows a corner of the downstairs sitting room at Charleston (known as the Garden Room). Grant painted frequently in this room (it was generally unused during the daytime), among his best known works being 'Girl at the Piano' (Tate Gallery, London) and 'The Artist's Studio' [sic.] of 1967 in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. The curtains and pelmet (still in situ) are from Grant's Walton textile Grapes. The view through the window looks across Charleston pond towards Tilton, the former home of Maynard Keynes'.
