Lot Essay

In his essay included in the Tate Gallery's 1983 exhibition catalogue of Butler's work, Richard Calvocoressi comments (p.26) that: 'The figure projected or suspended in space, which grew out of the image of St. Catherine straining against her wheel, was an essential aspect of Butler's iconography between 1953 and 1959; its dynamic rhythms can still be felt in the painted bronzes of the 1970s'.
