A. BLANCSUB
A collection of botanical drawings, 1849-1866. 67 sheets (various sizes, from 165 x 110mm to 458 x 305mm), loosely inserted into three modern albums, pencil, watercolour with bodycolour, and occasional heightening with gum arabic, the majority signed 'Blancsub' or 'A. Blancsub', often with date and place of execution, with descriptive text linked to figure numbers on the drawings, occasional notes on habitat and other properties, each drawing with black-bordered paper label inscribed 'Fig' in a different hand, a few laid on thin card. (Occasional light spotting, the largest drawing with short tears along one edge).
A FINE COLLECTION OF PROFESSIONAL, HIGH QUALITY, WATERCOLOURS COVERING A BROAD RANGE OF PLANT SPECIES, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF EXOTIC VARIETIES. The subjects portrayed include fruit, nuts, olives, berries, and fungi. All are identified by at least their Linnean binomial, and where appropriate their French name. Local synonyms are given when known, and many of the drawings include analytical details, include cross-sections and written explications. Blanscub collected specimens on his travels in Europe and North Africa. From 1860 to 1867 he was in Mustaganem in Algeria, and many plants from that region are represented in these drawings.
