Lot Essay

The present watercolour is similar in style to the watercolours published by Bolton in Twelve Posies Drawn From Nature, (1792).
It is possible that this type of composition was inspired by Ehret. The depiction of the ribbon is particularly close to watercolours in Ehret's Deliciae Botanicae (1732), in the collection of Lord Derby at Knowsley (see Calmann, p. 32, pl. 17).
