The Compleat Florist. London: printed for J.Duke, sold by J.Robinson, 1747. 8 (220 x 137mm). Engraved throughout. Frontispiece by John Carwitham, title with floral border and 100 plates, all finely hand-coloured in a contemporary hand, plate 55 printed with an uncoloured version on the verso. (Light soiling to title, slight smudging of colour to plate 4, some very light dampstaining to margins.) Contemporary mottled calf (joints somewhat split), modern green cloth box, morocco lettering-piece on spine. Provenance: Robert William Duff of Fetteresso Castle, Kincardineshire (armorial bookplate).

A fine copy of the second edition with contemporary colouring. Each plate depicts a figure of a garden flower with its month flowering and brief instructions on its culture, the first six plates also include the name of the gardener nurseryman responsible for growing the bloom. The elaborate frontispiece gives a view of an imaginary garden. The first edition, in two volumes (with a frontispiece, two titles and 100 plates) was published in 1740 (neither Nissen and Dunthorne were aware of this edition).
