Half-title. 42 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Elizabeth Ronalds, printed by Hullmandel. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, the covers elaborately panelled in gilt, the spine in six compartments wih raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration made up from small tools, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Provenance: Henry Benedict, 11th Baron Arundell, of Wardour, Wardour Castle, Tisbury, Wiltshire (1804-1862, presentation inscription, dated 1856, from his his sister Lady Katherine Doughty); Sir Thomas Neame (armorial bookplate).
A FINE COPY, IN A LUXURIOUS BINDING WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. Ronalds, who worked for over fifty years as a nurseyman in Brentford, published this selection of 179 different varieties of apples at the suggestion of John Loudon. The fine plates include a number of recent introductions. Ronalds concludes with 5pp. of Lists of the best sorts of apples, classified to the situations for which they are best suited.
