EDWARD DONOVAN (1768-1837)
An Epitome of the Natural History of the Insects of India, and the islands in the Indian Seas. London: T.Bensley for the Author, sold by Messrs Rivingtons [and others], 1800[-1804]. 4 (285 x 215mm). Errata slip bound after 'Advertisement' leaf. 58 fine hand-coloured engraved plates, a few heightened in gilt, some with gum arabic. (Some browning to 'Advertisement' leaf.) Near-contemporary half calf, spine gilt with the crest and initials of John V. Stewart (neat repairs to joints). Provenance: John V.Stewart, Rock Hill (binding, armorial bookplate); Mildred Bliss (Dumbarton Oaks bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. The fine plates are, according to the 'advertisement' leaf, drawn largely from specimens in Donovan's own collection. He also acknowledges the help given by Mr. Francillon, Mr. Drury, A.M'Leay and Sir Joseph Banks. Donovan considered this work to be the second volume of what he calls his General Illustration of Entomology. The companion works are therefore An Epitome.. of the Insects of China (1798-9) and An Epitome... of the Insects of New Holland, New Zealand, New Guinea, Otaheite.. (1805). Nissen ZBI 1144.
