Lot Essay
Pennant called Edwards 'worthy and ingenious ... that admirable ornithologist' (T. Pennant, Literary Life, p. 4).
British Zoology gives an account of the animals, reptiles, fish and birds of Britain; it was published between 1761 and 1766 in four parts with a later appendix. Peter Paillou (c. 1712 - c. 1784) contributed most of the original drawings for the plates, and Edwards contributed three plates to the folio edition including the Scaup Duck, the Black-winged Stilt and the Rock Ptarmigan, and three further plates to the fourth edition.
He is best known for his Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743-51), and for Gleanings of Natural History (1758).
