Contemporary russia gilt, the covers with decorative border of fillets and roll-tools (neatly rebacked, corners bumped. Provenance: THE EARL OF SANDWICH (sale: Sotheby 26 April 1982 lot 178).

THE DEDICATEE'S COPY, UNIQUE, with at least one plate sketched from specimens bought back by Captain Cook aboard the Resolution. Hayes is considered to have published two main works: A Natural History of British Birds (1771-1775, 2, with 40 plates); Portraits of rare and curious birds.. from the menagery at Osterley Park (1794-1799, 2 volumes, 4, with 100 plates). The present work is the third, but is at present known only from this copy and a fragment without title or text (sale: these rooms, 31 May 1996 lot 23).
On the face of it it seems strange that this work should remain virtually unrecorded (The only published reference is a passing one by Christine Jackson, to this copy: "In 1778 Hayes dedicated to him [Lord Sandwich] a collection of plates produced from his drawings of exotic and british birds" [Bird Etchings p.127]): the subscribers' list includes 261 names, and the inserted letter, undated but apparently referring to this work, speaks of three complete or near complete copies: the present one, "Her Majesty's set" and a copy to be delivered to Lord Sandwich's infamous mistress Martha Ray. However, William Hayes' chaotic life, the haphazard way he is known to have assembled his better-known works, together with the delays in completeing the plates may go some way to explain the uniqueness of the present work. In the letter he explains the resons for the delays in the work: "It ought to have been delivered last year", but an accident at home ("Two of my Children thro' the carelessness of the Servant were almost scalded to death - the Boy was mortified from his Ancles..."), and the subsequent collapse of his wife prevented him from attending to business. Due to said circumstances it may well be that the present copy was the only one ever completed.
The present work should perhaps be considered complete with 76 plates, i.e. without the three smaller format plates of birds from Osterley, which have been mounted at a later date on the verso of three of the bound plates. Cf. C.Jackson Bird Etchings pp.122-135.
