Diverses Oyseaux Dessignes et graves d'Aprs le natural. Paris: N.Poilly, [circa 1673]. Oblong 4 (2235 x 280mm). Engraved, cut-down and mounted throughout, title at foot of Aygle Royal plate, 27 plates only (of 31) by Robert, extra-illustrated with an 18th-century title surround (the centre cut out and blank), 10 duplicate plates, one folding plate additional plate by Robert from another work, and 21 small format plates by a 19th-century hand mounted on five leaves at the end. (Plates cut-down to within the plate area, with occasional slight loss to the image area.) 19th-century roan-backed marbled boards (lightly scuffed). Provenance: Monsieur de Mimeure (inscription at end).

FIRST EDITION. Robert was equally adept at depicting flowers, animals or birds: this pioneering work included subjects, many of them rare and exotic, taken from the menagerie at Versailles and includes some of the earliest bird 'portraits'. Nissen IVB 787.
