Lot Essay

Von Scheidl, or Scheidel as it is sometimes spelt, collaborated with Baron Joseph von Jacquin (1727-1817), who was commissioned by the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria to collect plants and animals in the American tropics. He worked closely with von Jacquin on his second project for the Emperor, the five-volume Flora Austricia and the three-volume Hortus Botanicus Vindobonensis.
Von Scheidl's work is rare, and his sheets of shell studies are particularly sought after. A sheet of studies of scallops and clams was sold at Sotheby's New York, 3 June 1981, lot 49, for $10,000 (5,155).
