Lot Essay

The sofa has Grecian stele-shaped arms that relate to a pattern adopted by George Bullock (d.1818) around the time that he opened his Piccadilly 'Grecian Rooms' in 1810. A related sofa, in Bullock's Grecian manner, was illustrated in Richard Brown's, Rudiments of Drawing Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture, 1820. A related sofa, attributed to Bullock, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 21 April 1994, lot 34
