The 'loo' or centre table, with reed pillar and hollow-sided plinth, relates to patterns in T. King's The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829. Its colourful top demonstrates the beauty and diversity of indigenous woods such as Calamander, Teak, Ironwood, Tamarind etc. originating in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). A related table was displayed in the Ceylon Court at the Paris 1855 International Exhibition and discussed in the Catalogue of the Natural and Artificial Products of Ceylon, 1855. A related table in the possession of Spink and Son, is illustrated in R. Jones, 'Nineteenth Century Carved Ebony Furniture from Sri Lanka,' Regional Furniture, 1996, pp. 27-39 and figs. 3 and 4. A similar table was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 30 April 1997, lot 175. The table was inlaid with the arms of Edward Synge Cooper (d. 1830).
