This richly ornamented architectural cabinet-on-stand, inlaid with lapis lazuli, agate and porphyry and embellished with ormolu figures and mounts, is designed in the seventeenth century manner and bears the retailer's and manufacturer's label of the celebrated Milanese bniste and restorer of antiquities, Giuseppe (Joseph) Bertini. Specialising in ivory and pietra dura inlaid furniture, Bertini exhibited at the Parma Belle Arti Exhibition of 1870 and retailed his wares from an 'antique and curiosity' shop in the Rue Venezia. Examples of his work may be seen at the Museo Poldi-Pezzoli, Milan.
