Lot Essay

The design of the backs of these chairs is taken from a design by Thomas Chippendale published in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed., 1762 (the right-hand chair in pls. XIII and XIIII).
A related set of chairs was sold by Lt. Col. A. Heywood-Lonsdale, M.C., in these Rooms, 6 June 1957, lot 91.
