Lot Essay

A pair of very closely related bergeres with the same side scrolls was supplied to William, 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850) for the libraries at Hackwood Park, Hampshire, and was sold by the Executors of the late 2nd Viscount Camrose (d. 1995), Christie's house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lot 55 (84,000). The attribution to Gillows is strengthened by the pencil inscription on the backrail, a common feature of their chairs.
Closely related bergeres appear in a Drawing Room elevation among Gillows' early 19th Century watercolours for room elevations in the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.47-1952). The chairs in the watercolour have reading stands.
An almost identical pair of chairs supplied by Gillows to Morton Davison, Esq., for Beamish Park, Co. Durham, were sold by Mrs. R.D. Shafto, in these Rooms, 21 September 1995, lot 168.
