Feather-banded to the front, the broken cavetto moulded cornice centred by a brass sphere, above a pair of arched doors with later bevelled plates and a pair of candle-stands, above a hinged fall-flap enclosing a fitted interior with six small drawers, eight pigeon-holes, a central door and a well with two secret drawers, the flap with a green leather writing-surface, above two short drawers and two further short drawers and two long graduated drawers, above a shaped apron, on later shaped bracket feet, one drawer inscribed in pencil, 'THIS BOOKCASE THE PROPERTY OF G.O.H. DUNCALFE ' the upper section of the interior of the bureau largely refitted, restorations

Lot Essay

A related bureau-cabinet, with pilaster-supported and arched cornice, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 8 October 1965, lot 101. A related single-doored cabinet, with serpentined cornice, attributed to J. Graveley, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (C. Gilbert and T. Murdoch, John Channon and brass-inlaid furniture 1730-1760, London, 1993, fig. 54).
