A CARVED RED LACQUER STEM-CUP
late 15th/early 16th century
Deeply carved through the thick red layer to reveal further black and yellow layers underneath, depicting warriors on horses and on foot engaged in battle before the fortified city walls, the background intricately carved with a range of diaper, spiral and wave patterns, all between a floret-honey-comb band at beneath the flaring rim and further phoenix and dragon bands around the splayed pedestal foot, the interior plain black, age cracks and minor repairs
