The first box and cover belongs to a select group with variations of the same 'Dancing Asiatic' subject, of which several are illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Ancient Chinese Lacquerware, Beijing, 1987; Jan Wirgin, Some Chinese Carved Lacquer of the Yuan and Ming Periods, Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, no.44, Stockholm, 1972, pl.17; and another in the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, Inaugural Exhibition Catalogue, vol.II, 1993, no.316, p.129.
The flautist on the second box may be identified as Hsiao Shih, whose music is said to have drawn phoenix from the sky.
