Signed Nihonkoku Kyoto no ju Komai sei, Meiji period (19th century)
Decorated in gold, silver and shakudo takazogan, hirazogan and nunomezogan, the cover with Hotei seated on sacks of rice, holding a hammer and playing with two mice within a panel surrounded by a band of butterflies, the sides of the box similarly decorated with various stylised geometric and floral pattern including mon [family crests], the rim with a band of key-fret pattern, raised on four feet with maple and ginkgo leaves, some old damage
