The upper part formed as a large balloon in split bamboo covered with black lacquered paper, bearing four mitsu-uroko mon in gold, the lower part covered with black bear fur with a leather strap for the suspension-ring decorated with gold karakusa on a black ground, the cover decorated around the rim with scrolling foliage in black lacquer on a gold ground and two gold mitsu-uroko mon on black lacquered leather, the rings for securing the cover gilt copper

Lot Essay

The mitsu-uroko mon was used by the Hojo family who were the tozama daimyo of Sayama since the 17th century.
