The togidashi ground simulating wood grain, inlaid in Shibayama style with Shoki seated extending his left arm on which an oni is perfoming a handstand, the reverse with two oni, one dancing with an open fan and the other seated, beating a drum, the top and bottom banded with silver rope, stained ivory and mother-of-pearl inlay, nashiji interiors, a small gold lacquered ojime

Lot Essay

There were three artists named Kakosai who worked during the 19th Century. This inro was probably made by Shozan whose other art name was Kakosai. He is recorded as having frequently worked with Shibayama artists. In this example, he collaborated with Nakayama about whom little is known.
