Of the sanju [Three Long-lived Personages of Mythology] seated in a large sake cup, Tobosaku Sennin holding in his right hand his magic peach and his crane standing beside him, Urashima Taro holding in his arms his minogame and a casket, and Miura Yoshiaki caressing his beard and holding a fan in his left hand

Lot Essay

A similar netsuke signed Kaigyokudo Masatsugu sold in these Rooms, 27 October 1987, lot 10 in the sale of Part I of the Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection.
Meikeisai Hojitsu was a direct retainer of the Tokugawa shogunate and was also patronised by the daimyo of Hirosaki in Mutsu province. Considered to be the finest carver in Edo (modern day Tokyo) of his time, his subjects included real and mythical animals and human figures and he carved in both wood and ivory.
