The guns were built as a celebration of the life and death of the great torero 'Manolete'. Born Manuel Rodriguez y Sánchez, he conducted his first ever bullfight in Cordoba on 5th. July 1917 as a 'Nacido' - a non-professional. He began training to become a professional in 1929 and by 1945-1946 he had become the world's foremost torero, winning the adoration of Spanish-speaking peoples the world over and especially in Latin America. He retired in 1947 but was persuaded to return for one more season. Tragically, his last fight, at Linares on 28th. August 1947 was to be his death-knell. Fighting the bull 'Islero' on the second fight of the day, Manolete was gored as he struck the killing blow and he died from his injuries the following day. He is remembered today as 'the surest killer of modern times' and one of the greatest personalities in bull-fighting history
