Including four open armchairs, each with a rectangular scrolled back and seat covered in laurel wreath patterned red silk, the apron mounted with roundels and on turned tapering legs headed by foliate collars (20)

This suite of twenty dining chairs is directly inspired by the group commissioned by the Empress Joséphine for the Salon at the Château de Malmaison, and executed by François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841). This set has been executed in mahogany and parcel-gilt, whereas the Malmaison set is entirely in giltwood. Jacob-Desmalter also delivered a related group of chairs in mahogany and giltwood, for the bedroom of the Double Apartment of the Princes, Château de Compiègne.
