Lot Essay

The design of these wall lights is inspired by a group of ormolu wall lights of the mid-1780s, usually attributed to Gouthière. However, a drawing in the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris, would suggest the hand of Louis Prieurs.
A pair of this model were moved to the Château de Fontainebleau, in 1806 (see J.-P. Samoyault, Pendules et bronzes d'ameublement entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 1989, no. 96).
