The greatest of all the Emperors, or Sultans, of the Ottoman Empire was Suleiman I (reigned 1520-1566) 'The Magnificent' as he was known in the West, or 'The Lawgiver' as he was known in the East. The expansion of the Ottoman Empire reached its zenith under Suleiman I when his troops laid siege to Vienna in 1529. The siege was ultimately unsuccessful and after the Ottomans had been repulsed, the Austrians found a strange brown powder in the Ottoman camp - the first appearance of coffee in the West.
