Allegory of the West and the Indies

The subject would appear to represent the contact and trade between the West and the East or West Indies. The West is represented by the putti with barrels, a ledger and an anchor, led by a putto with a caduceus, which was the symbol of a messenger, as well as (more rarely) of peace, who have clearly disembarked from the rowing-boat on the far left. The West is shown trading with two putti, one in some sort of skirt, before a pair of coconut trees.
