It has been suggested that this portrait is by John Hayls (fl.1651-1679).

The sitter was presumably John Bowyer (1623-66) of Kny Persley, Staffordshire, an active parliamentary commander in the Civil War, who was M.P. for Staffordshire in 1646 and for Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1656 and 1660. He was knighted and created a Baronet in the same year.
