Lot Essay

Five sittings are recorded for the present portrait between July and December 1780. On 22 December 1780 Romney received 18 guineas from General Cowper (c.1726-1797) for his son's portrait. George Cowper's portrait was probably painted immediately before he travelled to the East Indies.
