The drawing of the lady playing the harp came from a group of drawings, one of which was inscribed by Hayter: 'At the Duke of Bedfords'. It is close in style to a pen and ink study of Georgina, Duchess of Bedford in the Paul Mellon Collection, Yale (see P. Noon, English Portrait Drawings and Miniatures, Yale, 1979, p. 97, no. 103), and probably depicts the Duchess. Hayter practised as a miniaturist himself and later turned to history painting and portraiture.
The Romney drawing is a study for the oil painting that at the time was highly spoken of and in 1904 was in the collection of Lord Llangattock.
A distinguished actress, Mrs. Yates, née Anne Maria Graham, married Richard Yates, the comedian, and made her début in Dublin in 1752. She also appeared at Drury Lane, with Garrick.
