Lot Essay

Because of the popularity of this view of Rouen, Boys revisited it on a number of occasions. One of the earliest watercolours of the view dated 1832, was exhibited with Agnew's in 1997. In 1833 he published five soft ground etchings of Rouen; the view of St. Ouen is reproduced in J. Roundell, Thomas Shotter Boys, London, 1974, p. 111, pl. 39.
