1834 was the year that Fripp set off on his continental tour in the company of his friend William James Mller (1812-1845). The artists arrived in Venice after three months travelling through Belgium, Germany and Switzerland and were so enchanted with the city that they stayed for two months. Fripp worked up many of his sketches and exhibited a number of his views at the Old Watercolour Society, becoming a full member in 1845.
