The son of Joseph Severn (1793-1879), who accompanied Keats to Rome and sketched him on his deathbed in 1821, Arthur Severn was greatly influenced by Ruskin, whose niece, Joan Ruskin Agnew, he married in 1871. In 1872 he accompanied his mentor and Albert Goodwin on a tour of Switzerland and Italy (see note following lot 104). He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1863 and 1896, at the New Watercolour Society and at the Grosvenor Gallery. He showed most frequently at the Dudley Gallery, where his brother Walter was a founder member and later President.
