Lot Essay

The Arts of Industry as Applied to War was the subject of a lunette in the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert museum, completed in 1878-80. Having received the commission a decade earlier, Leighton worked on a cartoon for the mural between 1870 and 1872, and completed several drawings for the project simultaneously. Whereas the lunette's companion shows The Arts of Industry as Applied to Peace and a group of classical women adorning themselves, War shows a medieval city preparing for combat.
