A painter of topography, architecture and landscape, Shepherd toured England and contributed to Britton's Architectural Antiquities and Beauties, W. H. Ireland's History of Kent and Wilkinson's Londina Illustrata, published in 1808. The church of St. Saviour is now Southwark Cathedral, having been restored by George Gwilt the Younger in the early 19th century. The decision to install a cathedra, or bishop's throne, there was made in response to the growth in population of south London throughout the 19th century. Sir Arthur Blomfield extended the nave in the 1890s, and the first Bishop of Southwark was installed in 1905.
