Windsor Castle, from the Thames near Romney Island, Berkshire

The stretches of the water around Romney Island were a favourite haunt for fishermen. The Thames bargemen would lead their boats up-stream along the track, parallel to the river, depicted in the present watercolour. The north front of the Castle from Datchet Lane, near Romney Island, executed circa 1785, shows this area of the river including the garden temple (see J. Roberts, Views of Windsor: Watercolours by Thomas and Paul Sandby, London, 1997, pp. 74-75, no. 20).
